I never really liked to read as kid. Anytime an assignment would be presented to me with the intention of reading something and conveying the message, I was bored. I didn’t want someone to tell me what to read! Lol (What a brat). The truth is I wasn’t interested in learning about someone else through a book, I was learning from my surroundings and I thought that was enough.
The moment I found a love for reading was in Performing Arts school. Our acting and voice/speech teachers encouraged us to learn everything about our character. Look at what they were going through in history, their emotions on the page, their dialogue, and many other things I would’ve found boring before. Because it was for something that I enjoyed (acting), I found a new love for history, but most of all reading.
I hate to say, but I’m still not that into fictional novels. My real love comes from my deep passion for learning in the form of nonfictional, practical, and motivational books. I now realize how powerful they can be and how they can shape our thoughts, actions, and dialogue. Of course, fictional books can certainly do that too.
My top 3 books that have shaped my life so far are
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo
Each one did different things for my outlook and perspective of how I’m currently living and how I want to live. They are incredibly inspirational in their own ways.
Kondo’s book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up is not just about organizing your stuff. It’s about living a more simple life with only the things you love surrounding you. It’s also about letting go of anything else that doesn’t serve you anymore.
A Man’s Search for Meaning was probably the most life-changing book I’ve ever read. Viktor Frankl was a neurologist, psychiatrist, and also a survivor of the Holocaust. During his time in the concentration camps, he would question his life and what provided meaning for him in such a horrific time. In his book, he explains the mental strategies behind finding meaning and how they motivated his survival. Incredible moving, I cried so much.
I’m actually currently reading Big Magic. Elizabeth Gilbert is already someone that I admire for her podcast, which is based on this book. She writes about her idea of what creativity is and demolishing the fear that’s holding us back from being creative beings. I became aware of the fact I was telling myself a lie by saying I wasn’t creative. I have now changed that habit and feel that I can create content without the fear of judgement from myself or others.
